The International Center on Nonviolent Conflict is an independent, nonprofit educational foundation that develops and encourages the study and use of civilian-based, nonmilitary strategies to establish and defend human rights, democracy and justice worldwide. It accepts no grants, contracts or funding of any kind from any government or government-related organization or from any other foundation, corporation or institution. It is funded entirely by the family philanthropy of the founding chair.

OFFICERS & STAFF

Jack DuVall - President

Jack DuVall - President Jack DuVall is the President and founding Director of the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict. He was the Executive Producer of the two-part Emmy-nominated PBS television series, “A Force More Powerful,” and co-author of the companion book of the same name (Palgrave/St. Martin’s Press 2001).

Hardy Merriman - Vice President and Director of Content Development

Hardy Merriman is Vice President and Director of Content Development at the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC). For the last decade his work has focused on how grassroots nonviolent movements around the world can successfully fight for rights, freedom, and justice. He lectures widely to scholars, practitioners, and members of civil society.

Dr. Maciej Bartkowski - Senior Director, Education and Research

Dr. Maciej Bartkowski is Senior Director for Education & Research at ICNC where he works on academic programs for students, faculty, and professionals, curricular development, and global academic and educational outreach and research in the growing field of civil resistance studies.

Daryn Cambridge - Senior Director, Learning & Digital Strategies

Daryn Cambridge is Senior Director for Learning & Digital Strategies at the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict. He is also an education and training consultant and a Peace Educator in Residence at American University, where he teaches two courses: Peace Pedagogy and Education for International Development and helps coordinate peace education programs and initiatives.

Nicola Barrach - Director, Civic & New Media Initiatives

Nicola Barrach is Director of Civic and New Media Initiatives, after having joined the ICNC team as Program and Research Associate in 2008. She holds a JD from the University of Paris, Panthéon-Sorbonne, a Master's degree in political science and development studies from the Institute for Political Studies (IEP or Sciences-Po) in Paris, and a Master's degree in human rights and humanitarian law from the University of Paris, Panthéon-Assas.

Jake Fitzpatrick - Content Development Associate

Jake Fitzpatrick is the Content Development Associate at ICNC, after having interned there during the summer of 2009 and spring of 2010. He graduated from American University’s School of International Service in May 2010 with a B.A. in International Studies. Prior to ICNC Jake interned for the Global Consulting Group of Towers Perrin and the Peacebuilding and Development Institute at American University. He speaks French and Arabic and has studied abroad in Cairo, Egypt.

Ashley Farnan - Program Associate

Ashley Farnan, Program Associate at the International Center for Nonviolent Conflict, first joined the ICNC team as an intern in January 2012. Prior to ICNC she interned with the Truman National Security Project and worked as a research and editing consultant to academics in southern California.

CHAIR & ADVISORS

Peter Ackerman - Founding Chair

Dr. Peter Ackerman is the Founding Chair of ICNC, and one of the world’s leading authorities on nonviolent conflict. He holds a Ph.D. from The Fletcher School, Tufts University, where he presently is the Chairman of the Board, and he is co-author of two seminal books on nonviolent resistance, A Force More Powerful: A Century of Nonviolent Conflict (Palgrave/St. Martin's Press, 2001) and Strategic Nonviolent Conflict: The Dynamics of People Power in the Twentieth Century (Praeger, 1994).

Shaazka Beyerle - Senior Advisor

Shaazka Beyerle is a researcher, writer and educator in people power and civil resistance. She is presently a Senior Advisor with ICNC and a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Transatlantic Relations, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. She is conducting a research/book project on citizen empowerment and grass-roots campaigns and movements to curb corruption and gain accountability and rights.

Althea Middleton-Detzner - Senior Advisor, Education & Field Learning

Originally from the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Althea Middleton-Detzner graduated from the Lola and Rudy Perpich Center for Arts Education with concentrations in Music and Creative Writing. She received her B.A. in International Affairs and Development Studies in 2005 from the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University and is currently a graduate student at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
