In coordination with the Euro-Mediterranean University in Slovenia, ICNC is proud to offer the professional seminar, Power and Dynamics of Civil Resistance.

Target Group

Postgraduate students and others interested in any of the broadly defined subjects on the role and impact of non-state actors, and purposeful agency, civil society organizations, social movements, civic mobilization, nonviolent actions and civil resistance.

Content

This course is designed to provide an in-depth and multi-disciplinary perspective on the dynamic of civilian-based movements and campaigns that defend and obtain basic rights and justice, halt political oppression and facilitate democratic transitions and accountable governance. The course will examine the nature and attributes of civil resistance, its historical record and effectiveness when compared to that of violent insurgency, factors that determine successes as well as failures of civil resistance, common misconceptions and framing of civil resistance with a specific emphasis on skills, strategic planning and tactics vis-a-vis structural externalities, long-term effects of civil resistance on democratic transformation and sustainability and new, emerging areas of civil resistance studies such as curbing extreme violence, stopping corruption, promoting equitable and sustainable development, media faming of civil resistance or women's rights movements.

Teaching Methods

The course will be delivered on the basis of blended studies; a combination of face-to-face meetings and on-line self-learning implemented through individual review and study of electronic and audio-video resources that will be uploaded into the ICNC moodle system (e-classroom) and available for the students a week before the seminar. Next to presentation of the main concepts, the seminar will also include game exercise, documentary viewing, case studies and class discussions.

Assessment Methods

Student presentations on selected aspects of civil resistance phenomenon or historical case studies or/and selected contemporary movements or campaigns

People power: game exercise and individual or group presentations

Short quizzes on the assigned readings for particular sessions

Other Activities

Roundtable with invited experts will be organised. Participants will visit Piran and other places of interest such as Bled, Karts region and Ljubljana.

Certificates and ECTS

All participants of courses will receive a Certificate of Attendance issued by EMUNI University. Participants that will successfully complete their study obligations will receive the Transcript of Records with obtained ECTS credits.

EMUNI registration fee: 100 EUR | EMUNI tuition fee: 200 EUR Fees cover EMUNI course, study materials and other organised activities.

Financial Aid

Participants can ask EMUNI for financial aid for the tuition fee and/or accommodation in the Student Residence. Grants will be awarded on the basis of a recommendation letter and the grade point average of the current or previous study and availability of financial resources.

Accommodation and Meals

Student Residence at EMUNI: approx. 10 EUR per person/day in a double room (the number of places is limited).

Meals at the Student Residence: approx. 12 EUR (full board) per person/day
